1. Introduction to WHC

Worcester Hockey Club is one of the largest hockey clubs in the Midlands with 7 Men's, 4 Women's and 2 Junior teams playing on a Saturday, many junior age group teams from under 12 to under 18, along with a midweek and occasional weekend Veterans team and two mixed teams. It takes safeguarding very seriously so is particularly delighted to be one of only a small number of clubs to hold England Hockey’s Club Mark accreditation

WHC has a proud history of providing hockey related opportunities to the local community for over a century, whether it is playing, umpiring, coaching, supporting or providing administrative support; it is an inclusive club and strives to widen the appeal to the sport we all love, HOCKEY. WHC promotes hockey for both the social member and those seeking to play at a higher standard.

Speaking of elite hockey, some of its members have gained full international honours, England, Wales and South Africa, including participation in Olympic Games (Beijing 2008) together with World and European cup events. We also have players competing at international level in masters hockey at all levels.
The club participates in local and national leagues, domestic cup competitions at both junior and adult level, and for the more social member, it provides regular and well organised hockey, in mid-week and Saturday friendly matches, and leagues.

Other highlights include

  • A thriving masters section with members representing their country at age groups ranging from Over 35 to Over 80, both playing in and winning World Cup events. It enters domestic cup competitions for both men and women in the Over 35 to Over 50 age groups.
  • A current member is manager of the Midland Over 60 men age group team.
  • At junior level, players have reached NAG level for both England and Wales, most recently a player was selected for England U18 in 2019.
  • Our coaching staff have inspired young talent and we look to maintain this over the coming years.
  • During 2018 we organised coaching for junior and senior members by world hockey star Jamie Dwyer, we have also hosted special coaching clinics run by England hockey stars such as Shona McCallin MBE
  • Our members coach at Worcestershire & Staffordshire hockey academies and Midland performance centres.

The club enters local and national U8 to U14 tournaments for boys and girls, using these events to further engage with parents, many a parent having returned to play hockey after a long break or picked up a whistle for the first time.
