Tom Travers
30th October 1949 – 18th September 2024

We were all very sad to hear that our friend, Tom Travers had died recently surrounded by his wife Mary; and children Harry, and Kate.

Tom and Mary came to Kempsey, Worcester in August 1990 and immediately joined Worcester HC. Tom and I had been “old”, but the friendliest of (hockey) enemies over the years. Knowing Tom’s abilities, I quickly signed him up, over a beer, or two in the bar at Norton Barracks (of course!), to play in the Second XI, where we played alongside each other for many years.

Tom quickly became a very popular and much loved member of the Club.

He was also a stalwart in many of our Club veterans sides, often scoring crucial goals to help our progress in County and National tournaments.

In his younger days, before he came to Worcester, Tom had started his club career at Stone HC; he went up to London University, where he played in the First X1; back to Stone, where he also played for Staffordshire; before playing for Richmond HC in the London League.

As Chairman, in 1994, I persuaded Tom to take on the onerous role of Club Secretary. He was so good at it, that he had to continue in the post for the next 10 years.

More recently, as his aching hips caused more and more trouble, but always with good humour; Tom helped Mary in her very important job of organising one of the Club’s Badgers sides; often also umpiring for the Juniors.

He was also a Vice President of Worcester Hockey Club

In the last few years Tom and Mary were to be seen playing walking hockey in Malvern.

Tom will be very sadly missed. All love to Mary, Harry and Kate.
